Jerome Boateng feels last night’s defeat at Wolfsburg should serve as a wake-up call to Bayern Munich and has stressed that they cannot afford to make mistakes again.

Bas Dost and Kevin De Bruyne each scored a brace to help Wolfsburg register a comfortable 4-1 win over the German champions at the Volkswagen Arena.

The defeat was Bayern Munich’s first meaningful league loss in two years as their only league defeats since October 2012 had come after they wrapped up last season's title.

Boateng admits that the loss was unexpected, but feels it came at the right time just after the winter break and will act as wake-up call for his team-mates.

The Germany international conceded that they were poor against Wolfsburg and said that they need to make vast improvements before their game against Schalke next weekend.

“It’s simple – we played really badly”, the Bayern Munich defender told the club’s official site.

“It might be good that it’s happened to us today because it’s a wake-up call. We can’t afford another performance like that. We weren’t aggressive and gave away possession far too easily.

“We have to take a good, long look at ourselves. We all know we’ll need a vast improvement against Schalke if we’re to make amends for this.”

Bayern Munich are still maintaining a healthy eight-point lead over second-placed Wolfsburg in the league table and remain heavy favourites to retain the Bundesliga this season.
