Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal believes that Robin van Persie's opener in his side's 3-1 win over Leicester City was offside, but says the officials cannot be blamed.

Van Persie put Manchester United 1-0 up in the 27th minute, firing home from a Daley Blind pass, with Leicester convinced the Dutchman was offside.

The second came via Radamel Falcao, who converted from close range in the 32nd minute, putting Leicester in real trouble at Old Trafford and Van Gaal's men in total control.

Manchester United then bagged a third just before half-time through a Wes Morgan own goal, a shot being deflected, which killed off any hopes of a Leicester comeback.

Nigel Pearson's men did pull one back however, having to wait until the 80th minute to do so when Marcin Wasilewski was left free and headed the ball home.

But it was to be no more than a consolation, with Leicester having no further goals up their sleeve, allowing Manchester United to pick up all three points with a 3-1 win.

Van Gaal was quickly asked about the first goal, concerning Van Persie, and admitted to the BBC that he does believe it was offside.

"Yes, I think also that it was offside, but it can always happen in games when the referee and the linesman are not in a good shape at that moment. But you cannot avoid that."

The Dutchman also admitted that he was not too happy with his side's display in the second half.

"I like my team in the first half", he said.

"In the second half we tried to kill the game because we know what happened at Leicester.

"I think in the second half we played the ball too much backwards and not forwards – and that I don't like."
