Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp has resigned from his post with immediate effect, citing health reasons behind his abrupt departure from Loftus Road.

The veteran manager, who joined the Hoops in 2012, has been part of both the club's relegation from and promotion to the Premier League.

Redknapp's side though failed to live up to expectations since their promotion last year and are currently fighting relegation, placed 19th with 19 points from 23 points. The veteran manager says he needs to undergo surgery on his knee, which will stop him performing his duties, citing that as the reason for his resignation.

“I have had such a fantastic time at QPR. I would like to thank the board, the players and all my staff, and especially the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic to me since I arrived at the club for their tremendous support", Redknapp told his club's official site.

"Sadly I need immediate surgery on my knee which is going to stop me from doing my job in the coming weeks.

"It means I won’t be able to be out on the training pitch every day, and if I can’t give 100 per cent I feel it’s better for someone else to take over the reins."

The former Tottenham boss thanked club chairman Tony Fernandes for his support during his stay and expressed his confidence about seeing QPR securing Premier League survival this season, despite their current troubles.

“My relationship with Tony Fernandes has been one of the highlights of my footballing career and I wish the club every success.

"I am confident they will survive in the Premier League this year."

The 67-year-old's failure to sign new players on deadline day is also being seen as a reason behind his departure from his managerial post so abruptly. QPR were linked with a number of players, including Emmanuel Adebayor, Pablo Osvaldo and Aaron Lennon.
