Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn admits that striker Billy Sharp is constantly knocking on his door asking to play and has hinted a potential change of formation in future could favour the 29-year-old.

Sharp has slipped to the fringes at Elland Road this season, despite being tipped to play a big role for the Whites when arriving last summer from Southampton.

Redfearn threw him on off the bench as a late substitute against Huddersfield Town at the weekend – and Sharp came up trumps, scoring a last minute winner for Leeds.

And Redfearn admits that Sharp is eager to continue playing and often becomes frustrated by warming the bench, something the manager does not necessarily mind.

"Billy's always knocking on your door", Redfearn revealed at a press conference.

"Listen, Billy's attitude has been absolutely first class, I have to say.

"He gets frustrated and he shows it sometimes, and I don't mind that because it shows he cares."

Redfearn has recently been operating with one central striker, which makes Sharp's job of commanding a spot even more difficult. But the boss offered the striker hope by suggesting a switch to 4-4-2 may be on the horizon.

"But he's a finisher and he's bright; he's looked bright in training and as we said, the more confident we get with five in midfield, we might be able to branch out and play 4-4-2 and get at teams, particularly at home.

"We'll have to wait and see, but Billy has done his case no harm at all."

Sharp will be hoping to play some part for Leeds this weekend when they welcome Brentford to Elland Road for a Championship clash.
