Neil Redfearn has strongly hinted he wants Leeds United to offer midfielder Rudy Austin a new contract.

The energetic midfielder sees his current deal at Elland Road expire in the summer and Redfearn fought hard to keep him at the club on transfer deadline day amid serious interest from Wigan Athletic.

Now the head coach, who is delighted to have fended off interest from the Latics, is eyeing an extended stay for Austin, who he feels is the perfect type of player to help the young talents at Elland Road flourish and develop.

Asked whether he would like Austin to be handed a new contract, Redfearn said via LUTV: "I rate Rudy. I like Rudy around the building and around the place. You know what you're going to get from Rudy.

"He's a great guy, a top professional, does things properly and they are the right type of professionals to have with your kids, your better young players.

"It's important that we keep these people", the Leeds boss added.

The Yorkshire giants snapped Austin up from Norwegian outfit Brann in 2012, with the midfielder instantly going on to make his presence felt at the club.

At international level the 29-year-old has made 71 appearances for Jamaica, scoring six goals.

Should Leeds fail to offer Austin a new deal there is likely to be significant interest in his services.
