Former Scottish Football Association performance director Mark Wotte has called for the country's Premiership to be expanded to 16 clubs and says were Rangers, Hibernian and Hearts in an increased top flight it would make for a more exciting season.

At present the Scottish top flight contains just 12 clubs, with current champions Celtic topping the pile. The Scottish Championship, the second tier in the country, boasts only ten teams, with historic outfits Rangers, Hearts and Hibernian amongst them.

Wotte feels the Premiership's current set-up does it no favours and a 16-team league would make for a more exciting spectacle. He also expressed his disbelief that such a thing is not happening in Scotland.

He told Inside Futbol: "I really think the SPFL should go up to 16 teams and have a similar playoff system to Holland where the last team goes down automatically and the teams in 16th and 17th place (14th and 15th place in the new SPFL) compete in playoffs, with additional playoffs to qualify for Europe.

"This season shows that the SPFL would have been more exciting, more challenging, more competitive and thus more attractive if Hearts, Rangers, Hibs and Falkirk had been involved for example.

"I can’t believe this is not happening and think it is a very slow process to get things agreed upon, with so many clubs in financial trouble", the Dutchman added.

At present Hearts sit top of the Scottish Championship and on course to return to the top flight for the 2015/16 campaign.

Rangers are second, 19 points behind, while Hibernian trail in third. Falkirk find themselves fifth.
