Livorno president Aldo Spinelli has revealed that his club were discussing a deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the summer of 2013.

Kane has been one of the revelations for Tottenham this season and has become the number one striker in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, scoring 23 goals in all competitions.

His performances in the white of Tottenham prompted the club hierarchy to quickly tie him down to a new contract until at least 2020, which secured the future of their prized asset.

But the England Under-21 international was close to leaving the club even before he made his Premier League debut and the Livorno president regrets that he didn’t act upon his interest in the striker in the summer of 2013.

Spinelli revealed that he did talk about Livorno’s interest in the young striker with Tottenham technical director Franco Baldini, but said that they failed to act upon their interest.

“It’s all true”, the Livorno president told Tutto Mercato.

“It was the summer of 2013 and we were preparing for the start of Serie A season.

"I spoke with Franco Baldini and his name [Kane] cropped up, but it was not a real negotiation, we were just talking.

“We spoke about a loan deal with the right to make the move permanent, but then I did nothing.”
