New Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has revealed the Tottenham Hotspur were not always appreciative of Harry Kane’s quality and if not for him, the forward would have left the club early last year.

Kane has been a revelation for Tottenham this season and is now the club’s primary centre forward, scoring 23 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions in the current campaign.

However, the new Aston Villa manager, who was in charge of Tottenham for the latter half of last term, revealed things were not always rosy for Kane at the club.

Sherwood claimed that Spurs were ready to loan him out in January last year before he intervened and the striker did went on to make his first Premier League start under the former Tottenham boss in a 5-1 win over Sunderland in April.

While he is now the apple of the eyes of the White Hart Lane faithful, the Villa boss did say that Tottenham were not always appreciative of the 21-year-old striker’s qualities and Kane has worked harder than most to reach his current level at the club.

"If I hadn't resisted the club wanting to loan him out last January, he wouldn't be Harry Kane now”, Sherwood told the BBC.

"He had to be very strong mentally, he's had to fight it.

"They haven't always sung 'He's one of our own'.

"I'd had Harry Kane since he was 11 or 12. It makes a lot of difference, I know them better than their parents as footballers."
