Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has slammed his former side’s performance against Manchester City yesterday and feels that the Magpies were embarrassing.

Goals from Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko and a brace from David Silva helped Manchester City to register a thumping 5-0 win over John Carver’s side at the Etihad Stadium.

Carver talked about having a plan for Manchester City before the weekend, but they made the worst possible start to the game when after just 28 seconds his side conceded a penalty, which Aguero duly converted.

The Magpies were never in the game after such a bad start and Sheared slammed the performance, terming it an embarrassing experience.

"They didn't fancy it", Shearer said on the BBC's Match of the Day.

"They were pathetic. It was embarrassing, from the first minute to the last."

The former Newcastle forward feels the players never showed enough desire to provide Manchester City with a tough fight and with the quality of players the home side have, they were always going to punish the Magpies.

"It was just far, far too easy for City. These are top players. You cannot give them time on the ball like that.

"City showed so much hunger to get the ball back, even when they're 3-0 up. I never saw that once from Newcastle. It was pathetic."

Newcastle will be hoping to bounce back at home next weekend when they take on Tim Sherwood's Aston Villa.
