AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong has rejected the chance to hold talks with former club Ajax because he is waiting to speak to Manchester United.

De Jong's contract with AC Milan expires at the end of the season and the tough-tackling former Manchester City midfielder is not minded to sign an extension.

The Rossoneri are currently floundering in mid-table in Serie A, well adrift of the Champions League spots and look unlikely to qualify for Europe's blue ribbon competition next term.

Ajax have already approached De Jong over holding talks about a move to the Amsterdam ArenA, but the midfielder is not ready to return home.

According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, De Jong is instead keen on linking up with Louis van Gaal at Manchester United.

De Jong played under Van Gaal for the Netherlands and the Manchester United boss is thought to be keen to add his destructive power to the Red Devils midfield.

The 30-year-old has been a regular feature for AC Milan this season, accumulating 17 appearances in Serie A, with one goal.

He also counts Bundesliga outfit Hamburg amongst his former clubs.
