Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has praised his team for their quality of play and attitude during yesterday’s win over Elche.

Los Blancos defeated Elche 2-0 courtesy of goals from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo. It was European champions' third straight 2-0 win following their victories over Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga and Schalke in the Champions League.

Real Madrid’s rivals and second in the league Barcelona lost their weekend match to Malaga 1-0, which gave Ancelotti’s side a chance to extend their gap over the Catalans to four points with a win.

The Italian manager said after the match that after Luis Enrique’s side slipped, the onus was on Real Madrid to take advantage.

“It was an important game because of what happened to Barca”, Ancelotti was quoted as saying by Marca.

“We had the chance to open up a good lead, and we did it very well, with a lot of concentration both in attack and defence, real quality football.”

The three-time Champions League winning manager was effusive in his praise of the attitude shown by his team and added that his side need to keep improving.

“We played very, very well, and with this attitude we'll win lots of games. The team understood perfectly that it was a very important match.

“We are getting better bit by bit, our fitness levels are improving and we have to keep going.”

Prior to the start of the weekend matches, Real Madrid led Barcelona by a solitary point in the race for La Liga, but the Catalan giants’ loss and Los Blancos’ subsequent win has seen the European champions extend their lead to four points.

Ancelotti admitted that even though they have taken a significant lead over their rivals, the league is far from over and might just go down to the wire.

“We have the advantage, but the league title will be decided in the very last match.”
