Manchester United are set to send scouts to Portugal in the next few weeks to run the rule over Sporting Braga midfielder Rafa Silva.

Schooled at Feirense’s youth academy, the young midfielder joined Braga in the summer of 2013 and has quickly established himself as a key member of Sergio Conceicao’s team.

His performances in the top flight of Portugal have attracted interest from all corners and a number of top clubs are following his progress at the Estadio Municipal de Braga, including Manchester United.

The 21-year-old has caught the attention of Louis van Gaal, who is keen to sign a midfielder in the summer, and according to Portuguese daily A Bola, the Red Devils are set to send scouts to Portugal to take a closer look at the player.

A midfielder by trade, Silva can also play on both flanks and has scored four goals and provided four assists in 28 appearances in all competitions this season for Braga. He has also earned three international caps for Portugal.

His contract with the Portuguese outfit runs until 2019 and it has been speculated that a transfer fee of around €7.5m would be good enough to convince Braga to sanction his sale.

Southampton were also interested in signing Silva last summer as a replacement for Adam Lallana, who joined Liverpool.
