New York City FC sporting director Claudio Reyna has revealed that the club are trying to sign Barcelona midfielder Xavi.

Though he is no longer a sure starter at Barcelona, the midfielder is still a key member of Luis Enrique’s squad and is often called upon to pull the side though difficult situations.

The veteran midfielder had a number of offers from clubs from Qatar and the MLS last summer and for a while he was contemplating leaving the club before deciding against it and staying put at the Camp Nou.

However, New York City FC, one of the clubs who tracked Xavi last summer, are still hopeful of convincing the Spaniard to leave the Catalan giants and join the newly formed MLS outfit at the end of the season.

“We have not closed the door on Xavi”, Reyna told TV3.

“We will try to convince him to accept our offer as we are already looking to buy new players for next season.”

The veteran Spaniard announced his retirement from international football after last summer’s World Cup and has made 23 appearances in all competitions from Barcelona this season.
