Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has stressed that his side have learned their lessons from last season’s humiliating exit from the Champions League.

Facing Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the competition, Bayern Munich suffered a 1-0 loss at the Bernabeu in the first leg, but were reasonably confident of getting a result at home.

However, Carlo Ancelotti’s men were unstoppable at the Allianz Arena and humiliated Bayern Munich 4-0 in front of their fans. The then defending champions exited the Champions League in ignominy.

Lahm, who is currently recuperating from an ankle injury, stressed that they have learned their lessons from last season’s performance in the competition and will try not to repeat them this time around.

The Bayern Munich captain still remembers that night at the Allianz Arena and said that he has never seen such an abject performance on the big stage from the Bavarians ever. The World Cup winner is desperate to make amends in the Champions League this time around.

“One thing is clear, that everyone has learned their lessons and saw what can happen [if we are not focused]”, Lahm told Sport Bild.

“We had one disastrous game and that was the 4-0 at home against Real Madrid.

“That was not the Bayern Munich, as we know it.”

Bayern Munich secured a 0-0 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their last 16 tie and will host the Ukrainians at home on 11th March for the return leg.
