Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Mason insists that Spurs are heading to Fiorentina with a view to snatching a win tonight and progressing further in the Europa League.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side drew 1-1 in the first leg of their round of 32 tie played at White Hart Lane on last week. As a result Fiorentina start in a position of strength knowing that a scoreless draw will be sufficient to see them through to the round of 16.

Mason has shone under Pochettino’s management and the Englishman has gone on to become a regular fixture of Spurs midfield this season, which has seen the London outfit extend his contract until the summer of 2020.

Fiorentina have only lost twice at home in Serie A this season thereby making Spurs’ task of getting a positive result all the more difficult, but Mason insists that the visitors will look to get a win tonight.

“They’re a very good side”, he told the club site.

“We’re disappointed not to be taking a lead out to Florence, but we’ll go there to win the game. It’s important for us.”

The midfielder added that in order to win prestigious tournaments Spurs will have to beat difficult teams and Fiorentina are among the bigwigs.

“We were a bit unfortunate in the draw as Fiorentina are one of the better teams in the competition, but if you want to win a European trophy then you have to beat the best.

“If we get through then we’ll look forward to the last 16 but we are not looking past Thursday yet.”
