Russell Crowe has been informed that Leeds United are not for sale after he expressed an interest in taking a stake in the Yorkshire giants.

Crowe, who co-owns Australian rugby league club South Sydney Rabbitohs, is a lifelong Leeds supporter and is reportedly prepared to take a stake in Leeds if approached to do so.

The Championship side are currently majority owned by Italian company Eleonora Sport Limited, though Massimo Cellino, who served as president and owned the company, recently sold his stake in order to fight a Football League ban.

Nevertheless, Leeds chairman Andrew Umbers insists that the Whites are not a club currently on the market.

"The club is not for sale nor do the Cellino family wish to sell and nor have we received any approaches contrary to reports in the press today", the chairman was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"The ongoing legal discussions between Massimo Cellino and the Football League are being completely misinterpreted.

"Leeds United is currently being successfully restructured, rebuilt, significantly invested in, with care and planning for the longer term with the Cellino family at its heart, for the benefit of its long-suffering and passionate fans, the city and its players and staff", Umbers added.

On the pitch Leeds have seen an upturn in form of late under head coach Neil Redfearn, who has put ten points between the club and the relegation zone in the Championship.

The Whites' form has convinced Cellino that the club are not in danger of relegation, something he stated as a reason for not selling his stake to fight the Football League earlier.
