Everton boss Roberto Martinez admits that being the only British club to make it to the last 16 of the Europa League this season is a satisfying achievement.

Romelu Lukaku scored a brace at Goodison Park last night, adding to his treble in the first leg in Switzerland, against BSC Young Boys to help Everton to register a comfortable 3-1 win and they qualified for the last 16 of the competition with an emphatic aggregate scoreline of 7-2.

Everton were the favourites in the tie after winning the away leg last week 4-1, but they didn’t let up and produced another clinical performance against their Swiss opponents.

The Toffees boss stressed that even though they were comfortably ahead in the tie, his team didn’t sit back and he was pleased with another attacking master-class from his men at home.

“We made it an open game”, the Everton boss told the club’s official site.

“I was very satisfied with the way we scored three goals and created a number of good opportunities.”

With Liverpool and Tottenham’s exit from the competition, Everton are the lone surviving English club in the Europa League. Celtic too slipped out of the tournament last night, meaning the Toffees are also the only British side left in.

And Martinez is happy that his side could achieve the feat with two clinical performances against Young Boys.

“To be the last British team left in the Europa League is a very satisfying achievement and we have been very, very pleased with the way we have played both games in this particular tie.”
