Louis van Gaal believes that by signing youngsters Tyler Blackett and Reece James to new contracts he is helping to meet the club's aspirations.

The Dutchman was told upon his arrival last summer that the club wished for more academy products to be integrated into the first team and he has answered the call, notably handing first team chances to Paddy McNair, Blackett and James Wilson.

Yesterday, Manchester United confirmed new contracts for both Blackett and James – and Van Gaal is pleased to have been able to secure the pair's future at the club, also meeting a key requirement in terms of Premier League rules in the process.

"It is the strategy of the club", he told a press conference when asked about the new contracts.

"When I came here there they told me that they wanted to have more youth academy players in the first team", Van Gaal continued.

"Also the rule in the Premier League that you must have a certain amount of players in your own squad is also important.

"I am happy that we can sign players from our youth academy."

Van Gaal has, in addition to promoting young talents, also splashed the cash, spending over £150m on new arrivals last summer.

The Dutchman has led Manchester United to fourth spot in the Premier League at present, with the Red Devils facing a real battle to secure a spot in next season's Champions League.
