Manchester United academy manager Brian McClair is set to leave his post with the club to take up the role of the Scottish Football Association's performance director.

The 51-year-old, who joined the Red Devils as the academy director during the 2006/07 season, replacing Les Kershaw, will leave his post at the end of May, after 13 years on the staff of the club.

His presence at Old Trafford though stretches well beyond that, having played for the club from 1987 to 1998.

McClair will be succeeding Mark Wotte, who had previously been holding the position until 2014, having been appointed in 2011, as the performance director of the Scottish Football Association. His tenure with Scotland is set to start from 1st June.

"Brian's association with Manchester United started in 1987 and, regardless of where he is located, he will always be part of the family", Manchester United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said in a statement to the club's official site.

"As a proud Scotsman, this is a wonderful opportunity for him and he goes with our blessing and our good wishes for the future.

"In his time as academy manager, he has maintained and enhanced its reputation around the world and made a valuable contribution to the club's success."

The Scottish Football Association on their behalf also issued a statement announcing the appointment of the Scotsman.

"He was identified unanimously as preferred candidate during a recruitment process which involved the current Scotland national coach, Gordon Strachan, previous national coaches Walter Smith and Andy Roxburgh, as well as the Scottish FA's chief executive, Stewart Regan", the statement revealed.
