Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is excited at the prospect of playing in the League Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur at the iconic Wembley Stadium.

In the semi-finals, the Blues registered a 2-1 aggregate win over Liverpool across two legs, whereas Spurs were 3-2 aggregate winners against League One side Sheffield United.

Sunday will be the first final for Courtois in Chelsea colours since his move to the Premier League last summer following the completion of his loan spell at Spanish La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid.

The 22-year-old has upstaged the long serving Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech and has become Jose Mourinho’s number one in the Blues' goal. Now Courtois has firmly trained his eyes on lifting his first trophy for the west London outfit this Sunday.

“It would be nice to get our first trophy now and then see what happens during the last part of the season”, he told the club site.

However, the Belgium international is under no illusion about the difficulty posed by Mauricio Pochettino’s side, which dispatched Mourinho’s team 5-3 the last time the two sides met.

“It will be a hard game and hopefully it will end with Chelsea as the winners.”

The setting of the match, Wembley, is another motivating factor for Courtois and he is determined to prove his mettle at the spiritual home of football.

“It’s a very big stadium and there will be a lot of atmosphere, but I’ve already played at the San Siro, Bernabeu and Camp Nou, so the stadium won’t intimidate me.

“If, as a footballer, Wembley isn’t on your radar, I don’t think you’re a proper footballer, so of course you want to play there, and I hope we can win it.”

No stranger to big matches, having already played in a Europa League final, a Spanish Cup final at the intimidating Santiago Bernabeu as well as a Champions League final, Courtois is all geared up for the Sunday clash.

“I’m excited of course, but not nervous.

“It’s always nice to play in finals, I’ve already played quite a few in my career and hopefully we can win my first at Chelsea.”
