Louis van Gaal believes with a little more composure Manchester United could have beaten Sunderland by more than the two goals they did today, so many chances did they create.

The Dutchman's side ran out 2-0 winners over Gus Poyet's men in a Premier League match packed with drama and helped on the way to being settled by Wayne Rooney's 66th minute penalty.

A foul just before the spot-kick reduced Sunderland to ten men, although the Black Cats claimed mistaken identity when Wes Brown was sent off for a foul it appeared John O'Shea committed on Radamel Falcao.

Rooney then scored again, this time in the 84th minute, to hand the Red Devils their eleventh league win at home this season and move the side up to third in the Premier League table with 50 points from 27 games.

For Van Gaal, his side started with last weekend's defeat to Swansea in their minds. However, he was ultimately happy with the performance and the amount of chances created.

"We started not so good in the first quarter of the game", he told a press conference.

"Maybe we were nervous after [losing at] Swansea.

"But then we created chances and stopped giving them away. In the second half we played very well.

"We created a lot of chances and scored goals, so I was very happy then", the former Barcelona coach added, striking a delighted note.
