Neil Redfearn believes had Leeds United taken a golden chance to score when leading 2-1 over Watford today, they would have potentially avoided defeat, reflecting too that they backed off the Hornets.

The Yorkshire giants started like a house on fire at Elland Road and scored twice in the opening 20 minutes, with goals from Billy Sharp and Rudy Austin, the latter a sublime strike which put the Whites in the driving seat.

Watford earned themselves hope though when a Troy Deeney goal six minutes before half time. They then completed the comeback in the second half with two goals from Matej Vydra, stunning Leeds and securing a 3-2 win.

Redfearn believes his side started the game well, but then having scored, dropped back to allow Watford the time and space they then ultimately used to punish Leeds.

"I think if it becomes 3-1 it becomes a different game again", he told LUTV, reacting to the goalscoring chance his side had at 2-1.

"They are a good side, but you can't gift good sides opportunities. I think we didn't defend well today, if I'm honest.

"We started the game really well. We started our game plan well, to press and apply pressure, and they started to scrap and we played our football off the back of it – and got our goals", Redfearn explained, before pointing out his side then dropped back and musing why.

"For some reason the back four then took a step back and that put us under pressure.

"If you give good sides space and time to play in midfield, particularly because they play the diamond, you end up getting the run-around.

"We changed it round with the personnel who were out there and then changed it again, but the game was going away from us."

Leeds have an early opportunity to banish the pain of defeat however, when Ipswich Town visit Elland Road on Wednesday evening.

Following today's Championship results, Leeds are still ten points above the drop zone, but have slipped to 16th in the table.
