Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has stressed the importance of winning at Newcastle United on Wednesday and believes that back-to-back wins would set them up nicely for the last ten league games of the season.

After a disappointing result at Swansea last weekend, Manchester United came back strongly to get all three points against Sunderland on Saturday at Old Trafford.

The 2-0 win kept them in the top four, but with only eleven games remaining in the season, the Red Devils are just two points off fifth placed Liverpool and are aware that any more slip-ups might prove costly at the end of the season.

The Red Devils will take an away trip to Newcastle United on Wednesday and Smalling insisted that they need to make sure that they come away with all three points from the north east.

With only ten league games left after their midweek clash, the defender feels back-to-back wins will allow them to be build some sort of momentum going into the business end of the season.

“We need to make sure on Wednesday we get that win”, Smalling told MUTV.

“Because six points is crucial in these three or four days.

“We need some real confidence to go into what is going to be a crucial next couple of months.”
