Chelsea captain John Terry has revealed that manager Jose Mourinho took the League Cup seriously from the outset, which helped the Blues win the trophy yesterday.

Mourinho’s side defeated their London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Wembley to clinch the League Cup, Chelsea’s first trophy since the Portuguese retook the reins of the club in the summer of 2013.

Terry believes that the Pensioners' triumph is just reward for the value they put on the competition from the very beginning.

“In this competition he made it very clear from the outset that we were out to win it and credit to the manager and the squad”, Terry told Chelsea TV.

The current Premier League leaders significantly reinforced their squad in the summer with the addition of Diego Costa, Loic Remy and Cesc Fabregas as well as the arrival of Juan Cuadrado in the winter.

Apart from them, youngster Kurt Zouma played a starring role in Chelsea’s win yesterday putting in an assured display in the demanding role of shielding the defence.

And the former England captain feels that the right mix of players, who are all hungry for success, is helping the club move in the right direction.

“The squad is moving in the right direction with some young players and hungry and experienced players as well, it is a great mix.

“A few teams over the years have written this competition off, but it has always been close to my heart, and to be in this great stadium lifting this trophy is a really great feeling”, he added, emphasising the importance of the League Cup.

Chelsea will resume their Premier League campaign against West Ham United on Wednesday where a win for Mourinho’s side would see them strengthen their challenge for the league title.
