Following Leeds United 3-2 loss to Watford in their Championship clash on Saturday, Whites’ legend Eddie Gray feels that their defensive naivety cost them the three points.

The hosts went 2-0 ahead in the first 20 minutes following quick fire strikes from Billy Sharp and Rodolph Austin, Troy Deeney then pulled one back for the visitors as Leeds took a 2-1 lead into half-time.

Neil Redfearn’s side failed to protect their one goal lead in the second half as Matej Vydra scored twice to give Watford a 3-2 victory to deal Leeds their second straight loss after their 2-0 defeat to Brighton last week.

Gray, talking to LUTV, said that the hosts’ defensive naivety was to blame for their defeat as after taking decisive lead in the match they squandered it by the time the final whistle was blown.

“We were a very good side going forward, but not while defending and that was the disappointing thing I think, once they got back into the game there was going to be only one winner.”

However, the 67-year-old, who turned out for the Whites from 1966 until 1983, added that early in the second half Leeds had chances to add to their goal tally, but they failed to make the most of their chances, which ultimately cost them the game.

“But having said that I think we had some good chances at the start of the second half, great chances in the first couple of minutes and then they took control again.

“I don’t think we defended too well”, he reiterated.

“It was all too easy for them to get through us.”

Leeds United will play promotion contenders Ipswich Town in their next league fixture on Wednesday where a win would see them strengthen their mid-table standing.
