Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal believes that there is still a long way to go before they play the Classico against Barcelona and for now Los Blancos’ focus remains on their next game against Athletic Bilbao this weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were held to a 1-1 draw against Marcelino Garcia Toral’s Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu last night. Barcelona had won their weekend fixture against Granada to draw within one point of La Liga's leaders and Real Madrid had the chance to go four clear of their fierce rivals, but they couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity.

With 25 rounds of matches completed, there is still a fair distance to go before the season comes to a close, and Carvajal believes that there will be many more ups and downs in the fortunes of both the Madrid giants as well as the Catalans before La Liga’s destiny becomes clear.

“Last week Barca slipped up at home and dropped three points”, Carvajal was quoted as saying by Madrid daily AS.

“No one said that this was going to be easy”, he added, with regards to the title race.

The Classico between Real Madrid and Barcelona is scheduled to be played on 22nd March and before Ancelotti’s side visit the Camp Nou, they have to navigate Athletic Bilbao away and Levante at home as well as their Champions League encounter against Schalke sandwiched between the two league matches.

And the 23-year-old feels that there are their fair share of matches before Real Madrid face Barcelona as he insists that the European champions’ focus for now remains on their visit to the San Mames.

“There are still three points to play for between us at the Camp Nou although there is time to analyse the situation before that game.

“We’ll now focus on our next match and just try and pick up three points in each game.”
