Louis van Gaal has backed Manchester United winger Angel di Maria to turn his form around soon and said that any player can have a poor match on any given day.

Manchester United’s club record signing was substituted at half time by Van Gaal in their 2-0 win over Sunderland last Saturday and his replacement Adnan Januzaj did make an impact after the break.

Di Maria started his Manchester United career brightly, but his form has petered off in the last few months and the player himself has admitted that he has failed to perform at the level expected of him.

The Manchester United boss has sought to shield his star player from criticism and insisted that any player can have a poor match.

He added that a player from a foreign league will always find it hard to get used to the pace of the Premier League and stressed that Di Maria also has to adapt to a new culture in England. However, the Dutchman backed the Argentine to turn his form around soon and prove his doubters wrong.

“Every player can have that kind of match”, Van Gaal told MUTV.

“Di Maria is not the only player who has suffered a bad day.

“He can be the best player in the world in the next match, so I think everything is going well. He trained very well and I don’t think there is any problem.

“I have already explained that the higher rhythm of the Premier League is one of the most important aspects but he also has to adapt to a new culture, a new environment and that is not always easy.”
