Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke believes that results matter more to his old club at this point of the season than performances.

Manchester United are involved in a tight race for a Champions League berth with the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton and though they are fourth at the moment, Liverpool are just two points behind them in sixth.

Louis van Gaal knows any poor results from now until the end of the campaign might prove to be catastrophic in the larger scheme of things and so for him, getting results is of paramount importance at the moment.

While Van Gaal’s team have lost just twice in the league since November last year, their performances have come in for severe criticism. But Yorke feels it doesn’t matter at this point in the season.

Though getting results with impressive performances is always preferable, the former striker believes at this point in time Manchester United just need to post the points on the board to secure a Champions League berth for next term and with a tough set of fixtures on the horizon, Yorke believes they have the players, who can get the job done.

“Ideally, you want both [results and performances], but it’s all about getting in the Champions League for us”, the former Red Devil told the club’s official site.

“It doesn’t matter how we do it as long as we get there.

"It’s been a difficult season, but we’re in a position to kick on.

"There are some difficult games ahead but, with the players we have, we should be able to qualify and, yes, it’s about getting the results when it matters.

“This club has always risen to the occasion when it’s needed to, so expect the same.”

Manchester United will take an away trip to St. James’ Park to take on Newcastle United later this evening.
