Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted that he never tries to change the individual identity of a player, but stressed that each one has to fit his team philosophy.

Van Gaal has been talking about changing the style of Manchester United’s play and how each player has to fit into his coaching philosophy at Old Trafford since he arrived at the club last summer.

The Dutchman said that he will require time to mould the current Manchester United team into a winning force again, but critics have pointed out that the former Ajax boss has tried to tinker with the club’s traditional ethos and buccaneering style of play.

Some have also noted that Manchester United's players are afraid of taking risks on the ball and are too concerned about the system and Van Gaal’s philosophy, which they feel has slowed their tempo down.

The Dutchman insisted that each player is different in their own way and he respects the qualities they bring to the team as an individual. He is adamant that he never tries to tinker with an individual’s personal identity, as that is what makes them different from others.

However, Van Gaal stressed that no matter how different anyone is, they must accept to fit into the team philosophy and must be willing to make sacrifices for the greater good of the unit.

"Every player is at a different height of pressure and every player has to manage that pressure", the Dutchman told the club’s official site.

"Maybe six or seven players are always playing arrogantly and they need to be arrogant to play well while maybe another player has to be tense to play well.

“I respect always the personality of the player. I shall never change the personality of the player. I don't want that because we have to accept our identities.

“We have 25 identities in our squad and I respect all of them. I also respect them because of their talent as a football player.

“Nevertheless, they all have to fit into the team philosophy and the game plan, independent of their talents or their identity. Everybody has to do that."
