Ashley Young admits that Manchester United were well aware that their top four rivals were winning this evening, something which pushed them forward and helped them grind out a 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

Both sides had chances from the off at St. James' Park, but the cutting edge required was lacking and both teams went in locked level at 0-0 at the half time break.

It remained much the same in the second half, although Manchester United pushed hard to find a winner.

And it did come after Newcastle made a defensive mistake which allowed Young to score in the 89th minute, stunning the home side.

Newcastle were left with no time to draw level and slipped to a 1-0 defeat at St. James' Park.

Young was delighted, but admits that with news of Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs all winning, Manchester United simply had to claim all three points.

He told BT Sport: "We heard of results, others winning around us so it was vitally important to get a win here.

"It was great work by Wazza [Wayne Rooney], the ball fell to my feet and I put it away.

"People are always going to question the biggest club in the world. We concentrate on ourselves, listen to the manager and coaching staff and don't listen to anyone else", the winger added.
