Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has poured praise on David de Gea following the goalkeeper's strong showing against Newcastle United at St. James' Park last night.

De Gea made a number of superb saves to help the Red Devils on their way to a 1-0 Premier League win, secured via a last minute Ashley Young goal.

The victory meant another valuable three points for the Red Devils as they continue to battle to finish in the top four and return to the Champions League, a fight Van Gaal has dubbed a "rat race".

The Dutchman was delighted with the win, but took time to pay special tribute to De Gea, comparing him to former Manchester United shot-stopper Edwin van der Sar.

"David De Gea, this year, is unbelievable", Van Gaal told MUTV.

"In my career I have a lot of good goalkeepers, for example Edwin van der Sar was one of my goalkeepers and [Victor] Valdes also with Barcelona, but De Gea is having a great season."

Manchester United currently sit in fourth spot in the Premier League standings with 53 points from 28 games.

The Red Devils are just two clear of fifth placed Liverpool and four ahead of sixth placed Southampton.

Next up for Van Gaal's men is a return to FA Cup action, with Arsenal set to visit Old Trafford on Monday evening.
