Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy believes his side threw away the chance to beat Leeds United last night and only have themselves to blame for not returning to the top six in the Championship.

McCarthy's men fell behind against Leeds in the 71st minute, with Alex Mowatt scoring from a free-kick to put the Whites in control at Elland Road.

However, Leeds' lead did not last long, with goalkeeper Marco Silvestri fumbling the ball and allowing Freddie Sears to equalise for the Tractor Boys in the 74th minute.

In the 77th minute Billy Sharp restored Leeds' advantage, volleying the ball into the back of the net.

But Ipswich then had the chance to equalise when being awarded a penalty due to a Sol Bamba hand-ball in the 84th minute.

However, Silvestri redeemed himself for his earlier error by keeping out Daryl Murphy's spot-kick, leaving McCarthy feeling his side only had themselves to blame for not claiming points from the fixture.

"For their first goal we should have saved it, then he should have saved ours", McCarthy was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"The second goal, we got done.

"Then we had an opportunity with the penalty and he [Murphy] has not hit it with any conviction.

"I think we had the best part of the game if I'm honest with you.

"We had an opportunity to get back in the top six, but we threw it away."
