Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has advised Steven Gerrard to make a clean break from the Reds once he leaves the club in the summer.

Gerrard has announced his departure from Liverpool at the end of the current season and will be joining MLS outfit Los Angeles Galaxy in July 2015.

Carragher and Gerrard were team-mates for a long time at Liverpool, before the defender retired in 2013, having made 737 appearances for the Reds in a career that spanned from 1996 until his retirement in 2013.

Gerrrad like Carragher has played his entire career for the Anfield-based outfit so far, winning the Champions League in 2005 being the high point of a distinguished career.

Advising his former team-mate and captain, Carragher has said that Gerrard should make a clean break from Liverpool post his departure and look forward.

“Forget Liverpool; forget the football club and what has been – look forward”, Carragher told Scouse Bird Problems.

“It’s brilliant what he’s achieved, he’s a better player than I ever was, but he can’t look back.”

The former defender, now working as a commentator, cited his own example to illustrate his point, saying that he has not kept a high level of contact with the Reds since he hung up his playing boots.

“I’ve only been to Melwood two or three times since I retired – I’m doing other things now.

“People think it’s strange that I don’t have much contact with the club, but I think it’s healthy – when you’ve left, you’ve left.”

Carragher added that once a player leaves a club they cannot do anything to influence the happenings at the team, so it is better to stay out completely.

“Stevie should let them move on and he can focus on something else – LA, or whatever he wants to do.

“When you finish, if you’re not involved with the club then stay away and get on with your own life.”
