Sir Alex Ferguson has launched a push to persuade Cristiano Ronaldo to quit Real Madrid and return to Manchester United.

Ferguson signed Ronaldo for Manchester United and then presided over his sale to Real Madrid in 2009. The Scot, who retired from management in 2013 to take up a spot in the boardroom at Old Trafford, formed a close friendship with the Portuguese which survived his move to Spain.

Ronaldo has been consistently linked with a return to Manchester United in recent years, but no move has materialised.

Now Ferguson is doing his bit on the charm offensive front as, according to Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo, he had dinner with Ronaldo following Real Madrid's Champions League defeat to Schalke last week.

On the agenda for Ferguson was trying to convince Ronaldo to return to Old Trafford.

Current Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal went on record earlier this season admitting he would welcome Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, but Real Madrid continue to be keen to keep him at the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo has scored 30 goals in 23 La Liga games for Los Blancos so far this season.
