Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has lavished praise on Swansea City manager Garry Monk for the work he has done with the Welsh outfit.

Allen was at Swansea prior to his move to Liverpool in the summer of 2012 and during his stint at the Liberty Stadium, the midfielder made over 140 appearances for the club.

Former Swans player Monk was given the reins of the club following the sacking of Michael Laudrup in February 2014 and towards the end of the 2013/14 season, the Englishman was handed a three-year contract to lead the side.

Allen has said that he was pleased with Monk getting the chance to manage the team, who were led by Brendan Rodgers before he took the Liverpool job in 2012.

“When Garry Monk's name was one of the ones put forward, I was really keen and excited for him to get it”, the midfielder told the club website.

The 25-year-old further added that he never doubted Monk’s ability to lead the side.

After leading the side to safety last season, the 36-year-old has guided them to ninth in the Premier League. And Allen feels that his performance this year speaks for itself.

“Having played with him when he was the team captain, I always knew he'd go on and be a great manager.

“In a year, he's shown his ability. The team has been consistently good.

“They've been in the top half all season and it's great to see the club I used to play for doing so well.”

Liverpool and Swansea will go head-to-head in their next Premier League fixture at the Liberty Stadium tonight.
