Manchester United are preparing a €25m summer move for Lazio’s Dutch international defender Stefan de Vrij.

The Dutchman was also linked with a move to Old Trafford after Louis van Gaal took charge of the club last summer, but he eventually joined Lazio from Feyenoord.

De Vrij has quickly settled in Italy with his new club and has established himself as one of the mainstays of Stefano Pioli’s team at the Stadio Olimpico.

It had been speculated that Manchester United’s interest in De Vrij has now died down, but Van Gaal has continued to track the defender, who worked under his tutelage in the Dutch national team.

According to Italian daily Leggo, the Manchester United boss is ready to rekindle his interest in the defender and place a firm offer on Lazio’s table for De Vrij in the summer.

Manchester United are keen to sign defenders at the end of the season and it has been claimed that they are ready to offer around €25m for the 23-year-old Dutch defender.

While the offer would allow Lazio to make a significant profit on the €6.5m they paid to Feyenoord for De Vrij, the club are also not keen to see one of their most consistent performers leave after just one good season.

The Dutchman has made 28 appearances in all competitions for Lazio and has earned 25 international caps for the Netherlands.
