Manchester City and Real Madrid are ready to go head-to-head for the signature of PSV Eindhoven full-back Jetro Willems in the summer.

Schooled at Sparta Rotterdam’s youth academy, the Dutchman joined PSV in the summer of 2011 and has slowly established himself as a regular starter at the Philips Stadion.

Criticised initially for his lack of defensive awareness, Willems has improved over the course of the last few seasons and recently earned a recall to the Dutch national team.

At 20, Willems has already made 136 appearances for PSV and his performances have started to attract interest from some of the top clubs in Europe.

According to Dutch magazine Voetbal International, Manchester City and Real Madrid scouts were in attendance at the De Kuip to watch Willems in action against Feyenoord on Sunday.

Though PSV lost the match 2-1, Manchester City and Real Madrid will continue to track his progress and are expected to make their move for Willems in the summer.

Willems has scored three goals in all competitions this season, but his ability to create opportunities from the left-flank, as suggested by his 14 assists this term, is also one of the key reasons why top clubs are after the Dutch full-back.

If Manchester City and Real Madrid come calling in the summer, PSV are aware that they would be able do very little to stop Willems from leaving the Philips Stadion.
