Former Manchester United chief executive and current club director David Gill has been elected as Britain’s FIFA vice-president.

Gill is also the vice-chairman of the Football Association and will start his four-year term after Northern Ireland's Jim Boyce stands down in May from his role on FIFA’s executive committee.

The chartered accountant’s career in football administration started at Manchester United in 1997 when he joined them as their finance director. He climbed the corporate ladder at Old Trafford and finally took over the chief executive’s role from Peter Kenyon in 2003, who left the club to join Chelsea.

Gill oversaw the club’s takeover by American businessman Malcom Glazer in 2005 and retained his role at Manchester United under the new regime.

The 57-year-old formed a strong relationship with legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the duo were known for their astuteness in the transfer market.
