Netherlands assistant coach Danny Blind admits he hardly gave his son Daley any compliments in the past, something which has now firmly changed.

Daley moved from Ajax to Manchester United last summer and has now firmly stepped out of his father's shadow.

For Danny, it has always been important to be objective about his son, rather than letting the family connection cloud his judgement or be seen to have influenced his opinions.

That meant Daley hardly ever received compliments from his father – but now Danny feels any compliments given will be taken as the truth and not seen to be motivated by the fact the midfielder is his son.

The Netherlands assistant coach told De Gelderlander: "Perhaps I was very objective at one time in the past. That was during the period when he first joined the Netherlands team.

"If he had played a good game with Ajax, I told him he has played decently.

"With that I gave him little [praise].

"Now that is not the case anymore.

"He has now put something [a marker] down."

Daley has quickly established himself at Manchester United this season, clocking up 18 appearances for the Red Devils in the Premier League, scoring two goals and providing two assists in the process.

At international level, since making his debut in 2013, he has won 25 caps for the Oranje.
