Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has praised the leadership qualities of his team-mate Michael Carrick, comparing him with his former Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelo Bielsa.

The 25-year-old worked under Bielsa between 2011 and 2013 before the Argentine left the Spanish club in 2013 after his contract expired.

Equating his Old Trafford team-mate with his former manager, Herrera added that the midfielder often talks like him in saying that a leader doesn't talk much but is listened to when they speak.

Herrera also spoke about the apparently serious nature of Carrick, but insisted that the 33-year-old has subtle leadership qualities.

"Carrick is very serious but he proves another Bielsa saying: 'Leaders don't need to talk much, but they're listened to when they do speak'," Herrera told Uruguayan newspaper El Pais.

The Spaniard also took time to speak about the Red Devils' skipper Wayne Rooney, insisting that having the striker around is "good fun" as Rooney often insults his team-mates in Spanish.

On a rather lighter note the former Real Zaragoza player added that it is safer to speak about football with Rooney and he would rather not have the skipper try his favourite boxing skills on him.

"Rooney is good fun because he's very open and often insults us in Spanish, but I prefer to talk football with him because he enjoys boxing a lot and I'm not sure if he would try it on me."
