Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is elated to be named the captain of the Germany national team.

Schweinsteiger has been given the armband for the German national team after Philipp Lahm retired from international duty after leading the country to their fourth World Cup triumph last summer in Brazil.

The midfielder has been an integral part of the national team for the better part of a decade since making his debut in 2004. He has gone on to make 108 international appearances and scored 23 goals in the process.

And the 30-year-old was central to Germany’s triumphant World Cup campaign in Brazil.

Schweinsteiger has said that he is honoured to lead the national team, but insists that on a personal level nothing has changed and he hopes that his team-mates give their all as they prepare to take on Australia in a friendly tonight.

“Obviously it’s an honour, but it also brings great responsibility”, he was quoted as saying at a press conference by the Bayern Munich site.

“I’ve been captain a few times, but now it’s official.

“But it doesn’t change much.

“I’m the kind of player who thinks you need eleven captains if you’re to win.”

Germany will take on Georgia in their Euro 2016 qualification tie on Sunday.
