Liverpool have made initial contact with Inter Milan over a potential deal to sign Manchester United target Mateo Kovacic this summer.

It was claimed yesterday that the Nerazzurri are open to the idea of selling the Croatian midfielder at the end of the season to ease their financial burden.

The news of such a possibility has quickly made its way to Liverpool, who are great admirers of the 20-year-old and have been tracking his progress in Italy.

The Reds are prepared to meet Inter’s asking price of €30m to take Kovacic to Anfield this summer and according to Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, they have already initiated contact with Nerazzurri officials to discuss the deal.

Brendan Rodgers is believed to be a big fan of the Croatian midfielder and wants him to team up with another former Inter man in the form of Philippe Coutinho at Anfield next season.

However, Liverpool are expected to face stiff competition from arch-rivals Manchester United, who are also in the market for a midfielder and have been keeping a close eye on proceedings at the San Siro regarding the 20-year-old.

Both English clubs are expected to go toe-to-toe for the Inter midfielder in the summer, but Liverpool have made the first move in the transfer saga.
