Southampton midfielder and Arsenal target Morgan Schneiderlin has stressed that he is desperate to play in the Champions League.

Amidst interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, the Frenchman was looking to leave Southampton last summer, but the club blocked any move away from the club for Schneiderlin.

Though the midfielder was furious in the beginning, later he softened his tone after discussions with the club hierarchy and has played a key role in Southampton’s rise this season.

Though they are six points off the Champions League spots, Southampton are still in the race for a top four finish going into the business end of the season and Schneiderlin is keen to see where they eventually finish.

Schneiderlin stressed that at his age he should be playing at the highest level, which is the Champions League, and indicated that his future with the Saints will depend on them qualifying for the competition.

“In August I wanted to take a different course, but the club lost too many players so they decided against selling me”, the Frenchman told L’Equipe.

“Since then I did have discussions with the club hierarchy and at 25, I want to play at the highest level; it is important that I get a taste of Champions League football.

“Southampton might qualify for the competition and then I can stay.

“However, I have no desire to spend time in front of the TV on Tuesdays and Wednesdays."
