Chelsea have confirmed that veteran defender John Terry has signed a new one-year contract at the club.

Terry has put pen to paper on an agreement which will keep him at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2016 and ends any speculation over his future this year.

The 34-year-old had been due to be out of contract at the end of June and boss Jose Mourinho, who consistently explained Terry signing a new contract was a matter of when and not if, has quickly expressed his delight at the Englishman opting to stay put.

Mourinho told his club's site: "This new contract is not to say 'thank you very much'; it is because John continues to perform. He is a top defender. I am happy that he completely deserves this new contract after a season where he has already played 40 matches."

Chelsea boast a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League and Terry is on course to capture another title with the Blues.
