Southampton and England goalkeeper Fraser Forster has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery.

The 27-year-old picked up the injury while clearing the ball in Southampton’s 2-0 win over Burnley on Saturday and it also forced him out of the England squad to face Lithuania and Italy.

He was carried off the pitch against the Clarets and later underwent surgery on his left patellar tendon.

Though Southampton are yet to announce when the goalkeeper will be fit enough to take the field again, it is certain that he is going to miss the rest of the campaign.

Forster has been part of the tightest defence in the Premier League this season and has only conceded 21 goals.

He was replaced by Kelvin Davis against Burnley and the 38-year-old is expected to continue between the sticks for the Saints for the rest of the term.
