Former England national team manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has backed Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane to succeed in a forward partnership with Wayne Rooney, if Roy Hodgson decides to play the duo up front.

Kane has enjoyed a stellar season with Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs. The striker has scored a joint league-leading 19 goals and assisted a further four to help the north Londoners stay in the hunt for a spot in next season’s Champions League.

His remarkable performances have seen him earn his first senior national team call-up from Hodgson for the Three Lions upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley tomorrow, which will be followed by a friendly against Italy on 31st March.

And Eriksson, who was in charge of the England team from 2001 until 2006, feels that Kane is a clever player who will succeed if he partners Rooney up front.

“He is a good football player and Rooney can play with any player because he's clever and hard-working”, the Swede was quoted as saying by the BBC.

On being asked, if Kane should be part of the starting line-up for England’s upcoming games, Eriksson said that he trusts Hodgson to make the right call.

“I don't know the boy, the man personally, so it's very difficult to give advice on that, but I think his club manager together with Roy have spoken about that.

“I'm quite sure about that. So whatever happens with the national team I'm sure that's the right decision to take.”
