Schalke manager Roberto Di Matteo has admitted that taking Arsenal target Sami Khedira to the Veltins-Arena this summer will be difficult.

The 27-year-old Germany international revealed earlier this week that he will be leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season on a free transfer when his contract expires.

While Khedira’s departure from the club was expected, the revelation has sent his multiple suitors into a mad scramble to position themselves as the best destination for the midfielder.

It was widely believed that the Real Madrid midfielder had already agreed personal terms with Schalke over a summer move and the deal was expected to be kept under the wraps until the end of the season.

However, Di Matteo sounded sceptical about the chances of snapping up the midfielder when he told Sport 1: “What coach would not want Khedira in their team? The door here is always open for him.

“However, he will be spoiled for choice and I think it will be very difficult to bring Khedira here.”

Di Matteo's comments on the transfer saga will give Arsenal, who have been tracking the midfielder since last summer and are hoping to scoop him up on a free transfer, fresh hope of doing a deal.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also speculated to be interested in Khedira and have been keeping a close eye on proceedings at the Santiago Bernabeu. The German is also being chased by an unnamed Serie A side.
