Chelsea stalwart John Terry feels that opposition defences mark him closely at set-pieces due to his goalscoring threat.

Terry has been ever present in Chelsea first team this season, making 40 appearances in all competitions thus far. He has scored six goals and assisted twice, highlighting his attacking threat to go with his defensive solidity.

The 34-year-old has been at the heart of the Chelsea defence for more than a decade and over the course of his club career he has gone on to make over 600 appearances for the Londoners, scoring 60 goals in the process.

The defender feels that he had more freedom while attacking set-pieces when Jose Mourinho first took charge of Chelsea in 2004, but now he is paid special attention to by opposition defences.

“It is [my goal tally] not bad and it has been a big part of my career”, Terry told Chelsea TV.

“I had a good couple of years when the manager took over but then you get man-marked and doubled-up on at set-pieces with people blocking you off.”

Terry further added that once a player starts exhibiting his threat on set-pieces, he often gets tightly marked by the defenders in order to deny him chances.

And the former England captain has done a good job of evading his markers, he feels.

“Then you need to find different ways of getting the better of someone at a set-piece or wherever, so it gets more difficult once your profile becomes bigger and you are scoring goals.”
