Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has revealed that he still rues missing out on the 2014 World Cup held in his home country Brazil.

Coutinho landed at Anfield from Inter Milan in January 2013 and he has gone on to become a constant presence in Brendan Rodgers’ starting eleven, having made 42 appearances this term so far.

The 22-year-old’s five league goals and seven assists helped propel Liverpool to a scintillating Premier League challenge last season, but the Reds eventually lost out to Manchester City by a mere two points.

His performances last term meant that he was in line for a call-up to the Brazilian national team by the then manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, but the 66-year-old chose not to call upon the services of the attacking midfielder, thereby denying him an opportunity to participate in his home World Cup.

And Coutinho still rues the fact that he missed the bus for Brazil.

“I know that was the only opportunity I had to play at the World Cup in my country”, he was quoted as saying by the club site.

However Coutinho, now a member of the Selecao under Dunga, is looking forward to doing what he does best and earning a spot in the national team for the next World Cup.

“Whether I should have been called up is a bit complicated to say. I'd rather think about the present and make things happen in the future.

“I won't have that opportunity again, so I should use it all on the field, doing what I'm demanded to do in my position, what a midfielder must do, to be on the list for the next World Cup.”
