Wesley Sneijder says he has put the pain of being stripped of the Netherlands captaincy by Louis van Gaal firmly behind him.

Van Gaal took the captaincy off Sneijder in 2013 and handed the armband to Robin van Persie, insisting at the time that he could not leave the skipper's role to someone who was not guaranteed a squad spot.

But Sneijder will pull on the Netherlands armband for the first time since losing it tomorrow evening when the Netherlands play Turkey in a Euro 2016 qualifier.

Van Persie and Arjen Robben are both absent with injury and Van Gaal's successor Guus Hiddink is giving Sneijder the armband.

For the midfielder it means the period when he lost the captaincy is a thing of the past.

"I have left this time behind me, this is a new era", Sneijder told Voetbal International, when asked about losing the captaincy under Van Gaal.

"I am proud that I am the captain of the Oranje", the Galatasaray man added.

The Netherlands are badly in need of a win against Turkey as they sit third in their qualifying ground with just six points from four games, six points behind group leaders the Czech Republic.
